The PowerBoat Guide had this to say:

Introduced in 1965 a total of 1,203 Grand Banks 42s were built before she was replaced with a slightly revised model in 1991.  Indeed the GB 42 is the standard by which other trawlers her size are generally measured.  Her enduring popularity and strong resale values can be attributed to superb engineering and construction, timeless styling, and a proven semi-displacment hull design.  A genuine bluewater cruiser, a fine entry is combined with a moderate beam and full-length skeg keel to give the 42 excellent sea-keeping characteristics in a wide range of conditions.  Aside from the obvious change to fiberglass construction in 1973 (with Hull #353), there were few major modifications to the basic design during her production run.  Instead, continued product refinement can best characterize her evolution over the years from the original mid-1960s wooden version.
